My son was enrolled in Mr. Rutt's Math Connections course at Carleton University in 2017. The course was very well designed with applications of mathematics that covered a broad range of disciplines, including science, the social sciences, arts, popular culture and music. My son thoroughly enjoyed the course and it helped build his knowledge of mathematics, as well as his confidence in approaching and applying math to everyday phenomena. Mr. Rutt is an extraordinary teacher. He has a way of engaging students and encouraging them to apply math in ways they may not have considered. Mr. Rutt obviously put a great deal of effort into the course - it's design, the assignments that were given, and the material that he presented in class. The Math Connections course was the first time I have seen my son not rush through math homework. He would generally put aside Sundays to do his homework, and would spend much more time than necessary as he would read up on concepts that Mr. Rutt introduced in class. He would also look for creative ways to apply math in completing his assignments. The benefits of Mr. Rutt's approach and of this class will stay with my son as he begins high school in the fall. My wife and I are very grateful to Mr. Rutt.
